What is Wordle?
Wordle is a popular online word-guessing game that took the internet by storm. It was originally created by Josh Wardle in 2021 as a gift for his partner and later acquired by The New York Times in 2022. Here’s how it works:
- You get six chances to guess a five-letter word.
- After each guess, the game gives you feedback: green letters mean they’re correct and in the right spot, yellow letters mean they’re in the word but in the wrong spot, and gray letters mean they’re not in the word at all.
- A new puzzle comes out every day, and it’s the same word for everyone worldwide, which makes it fun to compare with friends or on social media.
- The goal is to figure out the word in as few guesses as possible.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are simple, but a few twists make the game more engaging.
- Letters in the correct spot turn green.
- Letters in the word but in the wrong spot turn yellow.
- Letters not in the word turn gray.
- Answers are never plural.
- A letter can appear more than once. If you guess a duplicate, both could be green, both could be yellow, or one could be each.
- Every guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. Random letter sequences like ABCDE won’t work.
- You don’t have to reuse correct letters in later guesses unless you enable Hard mode.
- You have six attempts to solve the puzzle.
- The daily Wordle resets at midnight in your time zone.
- Wordle’s answers come from a list of 2,309 possible words.
- You can use a wider pool of roughly 10,000 words as guesses. While plural words like WORDS are accepted as inputs, they won’t be correct answers (see point 4 above).
